All Star Extravaganza…

Yankee Stadium–there is no other baseball park in America that polarizes more people than “The House that Ruth Built.” Whether you love it or hate it you have to admit that the site of this year’s All Star game holds a place in every baseball fan’s heart. The fact that The Stadium is set to be demolished is a shame, but such is progress..

My favorite memory from this stadium–at least one I actually witnessed “live” (on TV…) was Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS, and then there have been other times that were not so good… but who remembers those… really?? I don’t…

To mark tonight’s Home Run Derby for our bacchanalian readers, I’ve linked a special 2008 Home Run Derby drinking game. For the Yankees faithful… a video of Boone’s 2003 walkoff home run shot from the bleachers…

  1. Several of LSU’s ultimate frisbee players back in the day — myself included — ventured to New York one weekend. We bought tickets to a Yankees-Cardinals game, that just so happened to be Roger Clemens’ 300th win and 4,000th strikeout:

Pretty amazing stuff, even though I hate the Yankees with a passion (Orioles’ fan).

  2. Wow that one ranks a little higher on the list than the game I saw back in ‘05. But NY was cool…

  3. Of course I have no baseball comments to make, but the Olafur Eliasson waterfall installations look amazing. I saw an article about it in a design magazine (go figure) & was quite blown away. It’s definitely worth a look.

  4. Those are some sweet sweet waterfalls erikpetes, too bad I won’t make it up to NYC in time to see them…

  5. That’s okay, I’m sure you’ll be busy visiting other exciting places…
So what’s all this drama about A-Rod & Madonna?!?

  6. WHOA! Here’s an interesting bit of news… Babe Ruth’s hat just went for $328,000 at auction. I guess he really was a big deal…

  7. “So what’s all this drama about A-Rod & Madonna?!?”

Stay tuned for my new column on Wednesday to find out!!!

  8. “Well I guess we can close the file on that one”–and for those playing along at home that makes three Lebowski quotes I’ve worked into the blog in the last two days….

  9. You’re so talented.
So I’m still waiting for this Home Run Derby thing to come on. Unfortunately I have to work tomorrow, so I will not be participating in any drinking games, but I guess there’s always next year…

  10. Well if you turn to ESPN you might catch the replay in an hour or two…lol

  11. Or you could just go here to get the recap… and if you were to follow the drinking game rules to the letter… you’d be dead by now…

  12. Well, I thought it was supposed to be on Fox & to tell the truth, I didn’t know what channel was ESPN…lol
So, I’m watching it now & you’re right, I would be dead. That was some funny stuff.
So what’s the point of the girls trying to play? I would be pissed if I was there & had to watch that.

  13. Josh Hamilton what a story that guy has been. Too bad he didn’t win but 28 HR’s in one round @ Yankee Stadium, that guy is a machine and by far the best hitter in the bigs. I also thought it was funny that one of the commentators mentioned how all 8 contestants of the Home Run Derby were WHITE!!!! He was pissed there were no hispanics.

  14. From the drinking game site: “Drink if someone mentions that there are NO Dominicans in the Derby this season.”

The same site had a post about the “color” of the Derby…

erikpetes I think you may be watching the 2008 “Taco Bell Legends & Celebrity Softball Game” it came on after…

  15. Thanks for the clarification. I couldn’t tolerate that disaster much longer. Thank goodness House is on in 15 minutes.

  16. I managed to play drinking Home Run Derby once or twice in college and only one was memorable, or well… you get the picture. It was the year Abreu hit a gagillion homers. Needless to say our small friend Adam V. threw up all over my coffee table and was carried out. It was good times I guess.

Wonder what they will put in place of Yankee stadium. The piece of property has got to be worth a fortune. Where is the new stadium?

  17. New stadium is right across the street.

  18. The new stadium is right across East 161st Street which runs behind left field of the current location. Here is an overhead view of the entire project… (from NYC Department of Parks & Recreation)

  19. aww you guys were the ones who taught me the home run drinking game back in the day *tear*
