the microcosm

Another way to spend my evenings.

A House by another name. (for erikpetes…)

As any reader, even the occasional visitor, would know I am little obsessed with House, M.D. It is more than a simple television show for me. It is a tv character, finally, who has the same attitudes and personality quirks that I can truly understand. I took a little under three months to explore and watch every episode made. It was one of the greatest binges of indulgence I have undergone in my life. I never went more than three days without an episode of House.

This obsession has reached a temporary end. I have loaned the first season disks to my uncle for him to watch and given his propensity to take his time with such endeavors, I doubt I will be able to rewatch those disks for some time. Also, this season has been a slight change of pace and with the current wait until April 28th for the next episode I have had to resort to new methods of feeding my addiction.

Clearly, House is an amalgamation of Dr. Watson and his limp and Sherlock and his brain. In my search for something to fill the void, I decided I should revisit Mr. Holmes and his stories. When I was a child, my grandfather would watch Jeremy Brett bring to life Sherlock on Baker Street. It was a chillingly real show with no frills. Very true to the literature. I have also watched a movie with Brett as Sherlock recently and they are still the unchallenged best portrayals.

It has been an excellent study differentiating House and Holmes. Their styles are the same. Their attitudes towards people are as crass and clever. Their motives hold true. The stark contrast between Holmes and House is towards women. House is a player, Holmes does not pursue.

Hugh Laurie has truly created a character for the ages. His acting in Jeeves and Wooster (an older British comedy) is good, but certainly less refined and more cheeseball.  But, the continuity he has brought to House is something only a master can create. The accent is beyond brilliant, the limp is never off, the mannerisms are not mere replications of Laurie himself (a few are, but not many), and even the delivery of the lines mark a level of character creation I have rarely seen.  Finding a match like that is more rare than finding a condom on a unplanned one night stand.  The perfect match of face, body, voice, and mannerisms to embody a fictional and never before seen person.

So, while I wait for the return of Gregory House, M.D. and will tune in to the new episodes with eager anticipation, I know that I will never have that same feeling I had for three months.  I lived alone, had few friends, spent every waking moment studying this character, and nothing could have been more fulfilling.  This strange obsession with characters is in some way a reflection of my lack of having a true identity.

  1. Love Sherlock Holmes. I am just finishing The Sign of Four. I also love House and I can’t wait till the show is back on since I will finally have a television to watch it on! :)

  2. Call me sick & twisted, but I got all hot and bothered reading that. Perhaps the thought of someone being so addicted, intelligent & drop dead sexy does it for me…

Don’t get too excited, I’m talking about House. Thank you for the fix. I think I’m going to need some alone time now.

  3. I wonder if women got all hot when they read about Sherlock Holmes 100 years ago?

  4. I have an inkling that the work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle probably made some ladies a little damp in the bloomers. Sherlock Holmes…I’d hit it.

  5. It’s cause Sherlock had an impressive schnoz isn’t it?

  6. But of course. A big nose is my weakness.

  7. I think I prefer Watson. Sherlock seems to be a sexist douche bag but I’m only two books in so I could be wrong.

  8. Watson is an average joe, who wishes he could be Holmes. Holmes sees through the shit to the truth. Watson is there to make the reader feel better for being equally dense.

  9. So, House, M.D. returns tonight. I have had to contain myself. I have wanted to read the wiki articles about the upcoming episodes, but I held back.

Will Wilson stay hooked up with evil bitch? Will House get depressive again? Will Foreman hook up with the new white chic?

  10. Ok, so no one venture to answer my intriguing questions. Fine, you’re a bunch of boring idiots :) (<- House impersonation)

I’ll do it myself. Wilson an the evil bitch are still annoying. The show is testing the waters. Can they make it interesting? If not, she gets the axe. I should know by the end of the season, but I am betting she’s gone early next season.

House is starting to get a little more like his old anguished self. He semi-screwed up in this episode and he will likely keep it up for the near future. I love that he offered Cameron her job back after 13 hinted she was a lesbian (not fun anymore).

Best episode since the strike, but I was disheartened to find out the next two part episode will end the season. 16 episodes, with lots of loose ends??? Not cool.

  14. HEEEE’SSS BAAAACCCCCKKKKKK! And, I would just like to say that I was right about Dr. Hadley, she’s not a lesbian.

  15. That was a wicked episode, definitely hanging for next week’s episode. I need to get a hold of some of those Alzheimer’s pills; I’ve been trying to remember a certain night with two girls. Damn the drinks.

  16. Yeah, I have to say that I have been anticipating this episode since the moment the last episode ended. Finally, last week our Good Dr. returned to true form. This is the kind of turmoil we had in Season 3 and it is so much more interesting. Damn the wait for season 5!

  18. So, rather than make a new post (just don’t have it in me right now). I would like to say that Season 4 ranks the lowest, but there are some caveats I must relate.

First, it only had 16 shows to create a full season with, arguably, the most complex story lines of the show’s history.

Second, the last two shows of the season were phenomenal and made up for much of the lame beginning.

Third, I see it as an interlude to possibly the most interesting of next seasons as we have a thousand possible directions for the show to go. Will Wilson hold his grudge? Will the Cameron and Chase be more or less involved? Will 13 die? Will House be a changed from his Amber experience?

To rank the seasons so far I say:
    Season 3 = #1
    Season 1 = #2
    Season 2 = #3
    Season 4 = #4
